Since its foundation in the late 1960s, Amaroo Care Services, has built a reputation as one of the State’s leading providers of aged care living and now offers more than 380 independent living villas throughout Gosnells, Denmark and Albany, 20 Community Aged Care Packages (CACPs) in the South East Metropolitan Region of Perth, an 81-place, low care facility (Amaroo Village Buckley Caring Centre), and an 92-place, high care facility (Amaroo Village McMahon Caring Centre) both located within the City of Gosnells. Additional villas at the Gosnells, Denmark and Albany Villages are currently under construction.
Amaroo is leading the way in WH&S standards in the Aged Care industry. They have been in the Safety First Program for some years now and their very low injury rate claims have resulted in significantly reduced worker’s compensation premiums, compared with the rest of the industry.
John Hanson, one of the senior managers at Amaroo was keen to take WH&S, within his operation, to the next level of awareness and preparedness.
With the help of Safety First and Cowdens, their insurance broker, they were able to get their insurer to reward them for improving their standards over the last few years, which resulted in reduced claims levels, by assisting them in covering the costs of ten of their staff undertaking the Certificate IV WH&S course.
Course participants included staff at all levels of the organisation from senior managers to maintenance staff and carers.
The result has been a higher level of understanding and awareness of the importance of WH&S in their workplace. This has led to affirmative action taking place to ensure safety is considered across all operational areas of this diverse organisation.
